About the Artist
Artist Maya Henaff creates vibrant abstract paintings that explore movement, color, and energy through expressive layers of acrylic paint. "I'm using bold colors with intention to stimulate emotions, but at the same time create this organic feeling of comfort and security," says Maya. Her artistic journey began with landscape painting, inspired by long walks through the forest and a lasting connection to trees, water, and the serenity of nature. Today, she brings that connection into her abstract work, drawing inspiration from memories of places, feelings, and combinations of color. Maya works from her home studio in Gold Canyon, Arizona, a small room filled with natural light from its southwest-facing window, where she paints with palette knives and experiments with layered surfaces and marks. She often listens to Americana, country, folk, and R music while working. Outside the studio, Maya enjoys long walks, yoga, and creating her own recipes, especially when she can have fun with their presentation.

His experimentation with different canvas preparations, his use of intense colors and his expressive brush strokes have created a myriad of visual combinations in his characteristic larger-sized oil paintings. The result is an emphasis on audience participation and the role of individual interpretation. "I want to make the viewer part of the process. That makes for a richer experience," Howard says. Throughout his career, Howard has been both a dedicated art teacher-administrator and a gifted professional artist. He chaired the departments of art at Arkansas State University, Kansas State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Howard has received 100 prizes, awards and honors including the top awards in the three longest running national open painting competitions: Society of Four Arts, Palm Beach, Fla.; Butler Institute, Youngstown, Ohio; and Chautauqua Institution, New York. The Omaha World-Herald has acknowledged Howard as "Nebraska's leading award-winning artist."
