Willem Bals, known professionally as Wim Bals, is a contemporary Belgian painter born in 1973 in Beveren-Waas, East Flanders, who now lives and works in nearby Stekene (Belgium He was raised in a painter's household — his father, Hilaire Bals, was himself a professional artist — and Wim grew up literally among the tubes of oil paint and brushes in his father's studio. This early immersion, combined with formal training in graphic design at the Technicum Antwerpen and classical drawing at the Academy of Sint-Niklaas, gave him both a disciplined draughtsman's hand and a designer's sense of composition, later refined through the traditional oil-painting technique he learned directly from his father. Bals paints in a meticulous, luminous style rooted in the Flemish Old Masters — he cites Vermeer and Rembrandt as key influences on his handling of light, and Hieronymus Bosch as the spark behind his surreal, fantastical universe. His mature body of work is best described as magic realism: animals, rendered with hyperrealist precision and dressed in human attire or placed in improbable, theatrical settings, act as gentle stand-ins for human character and "la condition humaine". Humor, incongruity and unexpected juxtapositions — occasionally tinged with a touch of Steampunk — animate scenes that always carry a note of pleasure and optimism. Each composition begins as a carefully worked-out sketch before Bals commits it, layer by layer, to panel in oils, a working method that echoes 17th-century studio practice and gives his surfaces their jewel-like finish. Bals worked for a time as an exhibition assistant at the Stedelijk Museum in Sint-Niklaas before turning to painting full time, a transition prompted by the steady success of works he was already selling in his free hours. Since then his paintings have been shown at institutions and fairs including the Städtisches Museum Schloss Rheydt in Mönchengladbach, Centre Rops in Brussels, Art Gent, Art Breda, Primavera Art Fair Rotterdam, and Art & Antiques Fair 's-Hertogenbosch, and he has exhibited with galleries such as Galerie 713 (Knokke-Het Zoute) and Galerie NVDBS (Bosschenhoofd). His work is now held in private and corporate art collections across Belgium, the Netherlands and abroad.
