About the Item

In Marilyn Crying, Russell Young takes one of the most photographed faces of the twentieth century and catches it in an unguarded moment. Marilyn Monroe’s eyes are closed and her hand is pressed to her face. Her expression lies somewhere between exhaustion and grief, far from the radiant image the studios sold. Young renders the image as a large-scale screenprint in saturated crimson and deep black. Seen from across a room, the work reads as a single bold, almost cinematic face. Up close, it dissolves into a field of halftone dots. That shift mirrors the work’s subject: the gap between the public icon and the private person, between the image we consume and the life behind it. Young was born in York, England, in 1959. He began his career as a photographer, shooting album covers and music videos. He later turned to painting and screenprinting, developing a body of work about celebrity, fame and the darker side of the American dream. His portraits of Hollywood figures often focus on moments of vulnerability rather than glamour. Marilyn Crying is among his most emotionally direct images. At 157.4 × 121.9 cm, the work has a strong physical presence. It is presented in a black floating frame.
