About the Item

This is a one of a kind original encaustic mixed media artwork by Tiffany Bociek. Its dimensions are 9 x 9 x 1.75 in. A certificate of authenticity will follow delivery. Created through encaustic (wax) painting, Bociek underscores several states of being: well-being, challenge, chaos, and transformation. In experiencing these works, we see that the physical layering of the wax draws a lovely parallel to memories that are passed down from one generation to the next as each is added to the collective family narrative. Her practice results in the creation of a spirited scene – some almost diorama-like – that is rich with detail and imagery. The artist reflects on the circle of life, and the power of nature to ground us through her layered and sentimental works. A note from the artist: I grew up with ghosts. I have walked the churchyard homes of family members I had never met; I have read the diary of my great-grandmother, crying for the heartbreak of her losses, as well as celebrating jubilance for her resilience. I live within the context of my familial history, weaving the strong relationships of my present with my ancestral connection to the past, especially when my own challenges and disruptions force me to shift and change. The refuge I find in the earthly world deepens my imagination, finding solace in my family garden, transforming the beauty of the botanicals into imaginative symbols of the profound connection between nature and the human spirit, and contains reminders of the circle of life. Encaustic allows me to intertwine my love of drawing in combination with painting and collage, pushing images back into an ethereal haze with each layer of wax. The nature of the medium forces me to confront my perfectionism and embrace the unexpected in the artmaking process. Much like I find solace in making my work, I invite you to escape, to let go of the weight of the world, and to revel in the beauty of the imagination. With this work I aim to evoke a gentle smile, a spark of joy, and a connection to your own inner daydreamer.

This is a one of a kind original surrealist figurative encaustic wax painting by San Diego artist, Tiffany Bociek. It's dimensions are 9"x9"x1.75". It comes framed. A certificate of authenticity will follow delivery. Artist Statement: In this piece, I wanted to create an environment that on the surface looks lovely: the colors are pretty, and the shapes feel inviting. This piece should give the viewer a sense of peace or hope. But I was also looking to explore an unarticulated sense of fear. The children head to a horizon of nothing. There are no trees, buildings, or any recognizable object. In fact, they are heading to unknown. The unknown can be our greatest fear. The fear of not knowing what is ahead of us can be debilitating, this type of fear can pull you back, keep you where you are. This type of fear can say to you: “It’s a scary world out there, better just stay where you are”. Instead of listening to the fear, these children represent the hope that it takes to continue to move forward relentlessly and resiliently. They are the part of us that represents the courage it takes to do thing in spite of pain, suffering, shame, or guilt. It takes courage...

"Muse of Transition", Encaustic, Oil, and Paper on Wood

By Linden Godlove

Located in Detroit, MI

Celebrating our common colors as well as our diversity is Linden Godlove’s latest series of encaustics, “The Muses.” The paintings are modeled after icons, with a direct gaze that hearkens a response to their spirit, to find company in their character. This particular piece is the "Muse of Transition" and is part of a set of nine that are sold separately from one another. Encaustic painting is an ancient art form (some early icons are encaustic), where hot wax is mixed with pigment and resin, and painted while liquid. Throughout the process, everything is repeatedly fused with fire and sometimes things melt in an unintended direction. Linden’s process involves repeatedly carving parts out and filling them back in, so the works are splayed out in a loose application of hot liquid, then cut back, then washed over with brushes of hot wax again. It’s a combination of chaos and control. The series draws inspiration from women all over the globe, as originally photographed by Mihaela Noroc for her book The Atlas of Beauty. A portion of the proceeds from these sales will go towards her project. While internationally influenced, the pieces were painted, scraped, and carved at the artist’s hundred year old Detroit...
