About the Item

Oil on Canvas. Emilian school of the 17th century. The scene can be divided horizontally into two parts: in the upper part, appearing in glory on the clouds of the sky, Mary with Jesus flanked by an angel on the right and St. Francis of Paola on the left, identified by the staff he holds, which bears a medallion inscribed with the word “Charitas.” Mary is talking with the saint, while Jesus looks down at the other figures gathered there in adoration. In fact, the following appear at the bottom: a few other saints, recognizable by their specific attributes. On the right is Saint Gertrude of Helfta, a Cistercian nun who holds a crosier in one hand and points to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on her chest with the other. On the other side is a group of five male figures, among whom the following can be identified from left to right: Saint Blaise of Sebaste, an Armenian saint, bishop, and physician, holding in his hands an iron carding brush—the instrument of his martyrdom; St. Anthony of Padua, dressed in a Franciscan habit and holding a lily in his hands; St. Mark, writing the words of the Gospel in a book as an angel behind him dictates them to him, with a lion crouching at his feet; St. Aloysius Gonzaga, kneeling in adoration, with an angel presenting him with the lily of purity, and a crown cast at his feet, symbolizing his renunciation of his noble title to join the Society of Jesus. A few little angels are flitting around these figures. On the left, connecting the two parts, a column rises vertically, while a blurred landscape can be glimpsed in the background. Some of the figures in the painting are more detailed and have well-defined faces, while others are more blurred. There is a clear focus on creating evocative lighting effects and colors that are harmoniously contrasted. and balanced to lend different expressions and movement to the figures, which meet and partially overlap while retaining their distinct identities. The painting comes from an important historical collection in Bologna. It has undergone restoration and re-gilding in the past. It is presented in a late 19th-century frame. Not signed

Madonna with Sleeping Child Follower of Giovan Battista Salvi known as 'il Sassoferrato' (1609 - 1685) Roman painter 18th century Oil on canvas Measurements: canvas 64 x 50 cm, in frame 76 x 62 cm. This delicate depiction of the Madonna in adoration of the Child exhibits all the human dimension and sweetness of the maternal atmosphere: Mary clasps the sleeping child to her in a tender embrace, which touches her cheek, enveloped and protected by the mantle and even a flap of the mother's veil. The pictorial style and composition recall the ambit of Giovan Battista Salvi, the Sassoferrato, who distinguished himself expressly for this subject, with the Virgin immortalised in a humble and strongly earthly pose, depicted with simple white, red and blue colours and delicate plays of nuances on the faces and hands. This iconographic prototype was so successful that it became the painting for countless works destined for devotion during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly appreciated for private commissions due to its marked gentleness and formal perfection, particularly of the faces. Born in Marchigiano, Salvi developed his activity in Rome, following the dictates of the classicist sacred painting of the Bolognese school of Reni, Carracci and Domenichino, but succeeding in having an autonomous and therefore clearly distinguishable style.  In very good overall condition, there are some small scattered restorations and some unravelling of the painted surface. Framed in a beautiful gilded frame. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is sold with a certificate of authenticity and descriptive iconographic card.
