This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. “Complementary I” by Alina Hubarenko is a striking exploration of colour, light, and reflection on the surface of the sea. Painted in oil on canvas, the composition centres on a vivid red buoy floating within vibrant green water, its simple form providing a bold focal point amid the shifting patterns of the surrounding surface. Through this minimal maritime subject, Hubarenko transforms an everyday object into a compelling contemporary seascape defined by contrast and visual clarity. Hubarenko’s hyperrealist approach gives both the buoy and water an almost tangible presence. Her meticulous handling of oil paint captures the smooth solidity of the floating object alongside the constantly changing character of the sea. Reflections, ripples, and subtle variations in light are rendered with precision, while the fluidity of the surrounding brushwork preserves the natural movement of the water. The placement of the buoy creates a strong structural focus within the composition. Its compact form anchors the scene, while its mirrored reflection extends into the water below and visually connects the object with its surroundings. Across the surface, overlapping ripples create an intricate rhythm of curved lines and fragmented reflections, introducing movement around the otherwise simple central subject. Colour is central to the painting’s visual impact. Saturated emerald and jade greens dominate the water, interrupted by flashes of electric blue that enliven the surface. Against this cool spectrum, the buoy’s intense red appears almost luminous, its complementary relationship with the surrounding green heightening the contrast. Fine white highlights tracing the ripples add further brightness and movement to the palette. The painting’s hyperrealism also encourages a heightened awareness of surface and texture. Hubarenko carefully captures the contrast between the buoy’s defined form and the shifting, reflective character of the water around it. Ripples distort its red reflection into abstract shapes, while small highlights break across the surface, allowing areas of precise realism to dissolve naturally into patterns of colour and light. Yet “Complementary I” is more than a meticulous depiction of a buoy floating on water. Through the deliberate opposition of red and green, Hubarenko turns a minimal maritime scene into an exploration of how colour can alter perception and visual intensity. The recognisable subject becomes the foundation for something increasingly abstract, where reflections and ripples transform the sea into a constantly changing field of colour and form. With its dazzling realism, vivid complementary palette, and sophisticated treatment of reflection, texture, and movement, “Complementary I” transforms a simple maritime subject into a distinctive contemporary seascape. This original oil on canvas work combines technical precision with bold compositional clarity, bringing colour, energy, and the mesmerising qualities of reflected light to any collection. “Complementary I” is currently on display and available for acquisition at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. Alina Hubarenko’s statement “The basis of my art is repetition and meditative practice of watching the world around me: its outlines, details and small nuances. I invite the viewer to walk this path of reality recognition with me, which is why I use a hyper-realistic painting technique where every line in the picture plays a role as a guide. For a long time I have been painting only one object – the waters of seas and oceans. It is beautiful in each of its manifestations, harbouring within itself an immense life force and energy that everyone can partake of. Today the people are drowning in a huge amount of information pouring in on them from different sides – fragmentary, contradictory, incomplete, turning their consciousness into chaos. In my work I try to step out of this flow and show the viewer a different state of balance and harmony, slowness of the moment and self-awareness through the greatest element on the planet. The sea is a great source of love and energy for me and I want to share these feelings through my work. My works are portals to a state of genuine joy and abundance so lacking in today’s world of technology and post-truth.”
