About the Item

Circle of Charles-François Lacroix de Marseilles (c. 1700-1782) A mediterranean port Oil on canvas Canvas size - 26 3/4 x 34 1/4 in Framed size - 34 x 40 in Provenance With Norman Adams Ltd. Charles-François Grenier de Lacroix, called Lacroix de Marseille (c.1700–1782) was one of the foremost French marine and landscape painters of the eighteenth century. Believed to have been born in Marseille, he spent much of his career in Italy, particularly Rome and Naples, where he developed a style closely associated with that of Claude-Joseph Vernet, under whom he is thought to have studied. His paintings enjoyed considerable popularity with both French and Italian collectors, and he became renowned for his luminous Mediterranean harbour scenes, idealised coastal landscapes and dramatic depictions of shipping. Lacroix's work is characterised by its harmonious compositions, delicate handling of light and atmosphere, and finely observed maritime detail. While often inspired by real locations, his paintings frequently combine topographical features with imaginative elements, creating elegant capricci that evoke the beauty and grandeur of the Mediterranean coast. He exhibited successfully in France from the 1770s and maintained a studio in Paris, where he also took pupils. Today, Lacroix de Marseille is regarded as one of the leading followers of Vernet and an important exponent of the eighteenth-century French marine tradition. His works are represented in numerous public collections throughout Europe and continue to be highly sought after for their refined execution, decorative appeal and evocative celebration of maritime life.
