Jos. Vanmaekelberghe – Still Life with Vegetables and Apples, Oil Painting, signed Jos. Vanmaekelberghe and dated 1931 Dimensions with frame : 58.5 x 79 x 3 cm A richly painted and atmospheric still life, signed Jos. Vanmaekelberghe and dated 1931, depicting an abundant arrangement of vegetables and fruit spilling from a rustic wicker basket onto a white cloth. The composition brings together a variety of carefully observed elements, including a large pale green cabbage, a dark purple cabbage, leeks, red apples and other seasonal produce. The overturned basket, positioned diagonally in the upper part of the composition, introduces movement and depth, while the scattered fruit and vegetables create a natural and harmonious arrangement. The artist demonstrates a confident and expressive handling of oil paint, combining broad, visible brushstrokes with more delicate touches of colour and light. Particularly striking is the contrast between the luminous folds of the white fabric and the rich, subdued tones of the surrounding objects. Deep burgundy, violet, dark green and earthy brown tones are enlivened by touches of soft pink, pale blue and warm red. The subtle reflections on the apples and the carefully modelled surfaces of the vegetables give the composition a convincing sense of volume and texture. The painting belongs to the European still-life tradition, interpreted through an expressive early 20th-century approach. Its painterly technique and strong tonal contrasts suggest influences from Post-Impressionism, while retaining the carefully balanced composition associated with traditional still-life painting. Signed and dated 1931 in the lower right corner, the work is presented in a decorative gilt wooden frame that complements its warm colour palette. An attractive example of interwar European still-life painting, combining a timeless subject with a lively and individual artistic interpretation. Wohlgemuth, Daniel (1876-1967), a son of Johannes Wohlgemuth of Albisheim an der Pfrim and Katharina (Krehbiel) Wohlgemuth of Weierhof, was born at Albisheim 17 April 1876, but reared by his uncle Johannes Krehbiel of Weierhof, studied art at Frankfurt and Strasbourg, and finally at the Art Academy in Munich under Franz von Stuck. His travels in Italy, Palestine, and Russia contributed to his development. His artistic work was done chiefly in his native Rhenish Hesse and the Palatinate (for a time living at Weierhof, later at Gundersheim near Worms), but also for a time in Munich and Berlin. His chief medium was black and white drawing, including charcoal (often lithographs) but also water colors and oils. His themes were largely landscapes, often of his native land, with a fine series on Palestine. He also did many portraits, including an excellent one of Albert Schweitzer...
