About the Item

Marguerite Stuber Pearson (American, 1898-1978) Untitled, 20th century Oil on board Sight: 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. Framed: 16 5/8 x 14 5/8 x 1 1/4 in. Signed lower left: M.S. Pearson Marguerite Stuber Pearson (1899–1978) was an accomplished American painter best known for her exquisitely rendered interiors, floral still lifes, and figurative compositions. Born in Philadelphia, Pearson developed an early ambition to become an artist, despite being left paraplegic and confined to a wheelchair after contracting polio as a teenager. She pursued her artistic education in Boston, studying at the Fenway School of Illustration and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School from 1918 to 1922, where she worked with William James and Frederick Bosley. From 1922 to 1927, she continued her training through private study with the renowned Boston painter Edmund C. Tarbell, while also studying landscape, design, and illustration with artists including Aldro T. Hibbard, Henry Leith-Ross, Henry Hunt Clark, and Howard Giles. Pearson initially worked as a magazine and news illustrator before turning her attention to painting full time. She became particularly admired for her carefully observed interiors and luminous floral still lifes, characterized by balanced compositions, precise draftsmanship, and a sensitive treatment of light. After spending summers in Rockport, Massachusetts beginning in 1920, she moved there permanently in 1941. By the mid-1940s, her work had achieved considerable commercial success and was reproduced as prints, while her reputation as a painter, teacher, and juror continued to grow. She remained active as an artist and instructor well into her later years, teaching from her Rockport studio until her death in 1978.
