Kiefer builds Arabesque almost entirely from a single hue, working a narrow red range from deep oxblood through scarlet to a soft, chalky pink. A large rounded form dominates the square canvas, its silhouette suggesting a vessel without committing to one, cut through by vertical bands that shift its color as they pass across it. A striped panel occupies the left third, its horizontal rhythm set against the vertical divisions to the right, while a dark lens shape near the lower center pulls the eye down and grounds the composition. The painting's tension comes from that restraint: with no contrasting color to lean on, the structure has to carry itself through value and edge alone.
Susan Kiefer is an American painter born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, who spent three decades on the West Coast before returning to her hometown in 2014. She earned both her BFA and MFA in printmaking from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, and one of her woodcut artist books entered the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. A graduate painting seminar with artist John Zurier redirected her focus from printmaking toward painting, a medium she found more immediate and direct — a shift that has defined her practice ever since.
Kiefer's work is best known for its exploration of hard-edged geometric abstraction, building compositions from a deliberately restrained vocabulary of shapes, color, and pattern. Her Expressive Geometric Abstract series examines how geometric form — inherently a human construct rather than something found in nature — can carry emotional and expressive weight despite its structural simplicity. In more recent years, Kiefer has moved toward figurative painting as well, using the human body to explore mythical and visceral themes, layering a more corporeal language alongside her geometric roots. Her paintings have been shown in galleries across Kansas City and New York, including a solo exhibition of geometric oil paintings in Manhattan, and she maintains studio practices connecting both coasts.
Represented in Kansas City by Cerbera Gallery, Kiefer continues to move fluidly between abstraction and figuration, treating each new body of work as an open question rather than a fixed style. Her paintings are held in private collections nationally and have been featured through regional arts organizations and curated exhibitions highlighting contemporary American abstraction.
