IFAC Arts presents the entire Slim Aarons Collection in partnership with Getty Images. Marrakesh became a fixture of the international travel circuit during the 1960s. The city had drawn European painters and writers since the 1920s, when Jacques Majorelle bought his palm grove and the first grand hotels opened inside the ramparts, but it was in the postwar decades that it acquired the particular character Aarons came to photograph: a place where the ochre city and the Atlas beyond it supplied the setting, and a small number of hotels and private houses supplied the society. By 1969 the season ran through the winter, when Europeans came for the light and the warmth, and the hotel pool had become the place where the day was organized. What the photographs of this period record is a specific and short-lived arrangement, the Moroccan city as a backdrop for a European leisure that had arrived recently and did not yet think of itself as tourism. Aarons photographed the pool in 1969 at close range and slightly above his subject. A woman lies prone on a green mattress at the water's edge in a white bikini, a navy towel wound into a turban, an open book in front of her and a cigarette held up in her right hand. A glass and a small bottle stand within reach. Behind her the poolside is arranged in white and hot pink, a waiter crosses in a white jacket, oleander is in flower, and a pink building with blue-painted balconies rises past a diving board on a white steel frame. The composition gives the woman the entire foreground and everything else the middle distance, so that the picture is at once a portrait and an inventory of what a Moroccan hotel afternoon consisted of. Slim Aarons (1916–2006) spent nearly five decades photographing international society for publications including LIFE, Town & Country, Holiday, and Travel + Leisure. A former World War II combat photographer, he turned after the war toward leisure, style, and the private worlds of actors, aristocrats, designers, and social figures. His 1974 book, A Wonderful Time, remains a landmark record of postwar glamour, while his photographs are now closely associated with the visual language of midcentury leisure and modernist design. For more than a decade, IFAC Arts has placed Slim Aarons photographs in private collections worldwide. More recently, IFAC worked directly with museum teams to facilitate Aarons' inclusion in two exhibitions: Pool Party: The Pool in American Art at the Mennello Museum of American Art in 2025, and Wide Expanse at Odunpazarı Modern Museum in Turkey in 2026.
