About the Item

Ghost I (Red) is a 1991 etching with aquatint by Sir Terry Frost RA, extensively coloured by hand, signed and numbered 3/25 H/P (Kemp 126). Sir Terry Frost (1915–2003) was one of the central figures of the St Ives School, and his prints of the late 1980s and 1990s are among the most vibrant of his career. In Ghost I (Red), a great red disc is swept by a curling black crescent edged with bands of colour. Green and red arrow forms dive in from the upper left, and a dark, brush-like form rises at the top right, with fine crayon lines and spatters of red around the edges. Each impression in this edition was coloured by hand, so no two are identical. This Terry Frost etching is signed and dated "Terry Frost 91" and numbered "3/25 H/P" in pencil. It is a hand-pulled impression on thick wove paper, printed by the Print Centre, London, and published by the artist in Newlyn. The image measures 34.5 × 34 cm, and it is framed to 57 × 56 cm, ready to hang away from direct sunlight. Frost was elected a Royal Academician in 1992 and knighted in 1998, and his work is in Tate and many public collections. The print is catalogued as Kemp 126. A hand-coloured, numbered impression is a fine and colourful example of Terry Frost's late printmaking. Provenance: Bonhams, London.
