About the Item

The original Château Mouton Rothschild 1988 label, created by American artist Keith Haring, is an emblematic work of art combining the excellence of the wine and the artist's creative talent. Château Mouton Rothschild, a famous French vineyard, has had a tradition of calling on renowned artists to design their wine labels since 1945. In 1988, Keith Haring had the honor of creating this unique label. Haring, known for his distinctive style of simple shapes and vivid colors, captured the essence of the spirit of wine with his creation. The label features dynamic dancing figures, reminiscent of the wine's fluid movements in the glass. The energetic lines and vivid colors convey both the vivacity of the wine and the dynamism of the artist. Château Mouton Rothschild's association with Keith Haring has brought together two artistic worlds, that of winemaking and that of contemporary urban art. The label thus becomes a sought-after collector's item, linking the prestige of the vineyard with the artist's worldwide renown. This collaboration has helped to broaden the audience for Haring's art, and to strengthen the appeal of Château Mouton Rothschild wine to art collectors and wine lovers alike. The 1988 label is a celebration of artistic creativity and wine refinement, an alliance that endures through the years and crosses artistic boundaries. Original 1986 Bernard Séjourné Château Mouton Rothschild Poster

Original 1986 Bernard Séjourné Château Mouton Rothschild Poster

By Bernard Séjourné

Located in PARIS, FR

This original poster reproduces the celebrated 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild label, created by French artist Bernard Séjourné for one of Bordeaux's most prestigious First Growth estates. Since 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild has commissioned a different artist each year to create the artwork for its vintage label, transforming every bottle into a meeting point between fine wine and contemporary art. Over the decades, the estate has collaborated with some of the greatest names of the twentieth century, including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon and Keith Haring. For the 1986 vintage, Baron Philippe de Rothschild selected an artwork by Bernard Séjourné, inspired by a painting on wood executed in Haiti, as indicated by the inscription: "Peinture sur bois réalisée en Haïti par Bernard Séjourné." The composition presents three stylized, dreamlike figures floating against a deep black background beneath a luminous moon. The simplicity of the forms, combined with their sculptural appearance and peaceful expressions, evokes both Haitian folk art traditions and the poetic symbolism characteristic of Séjourné's work. The label also records the remarkable production figures of the vintage: "La récolte 1986 a produit 291.800 bordelaises et demies, 7.250 magnums et jéroboams..." Most importantly, the vintage marked Baron Philippe de Rothschild's 64th harvest at Mouton Rothschild, a fact proudly noted on the label itself: "Ma 64ème vendange." The 1986 vintage therefore occupies a special place in the long history of the château, representing one of the final harvests overseen personally by the visionary Baron who transformed Mouton Rothschild into one of the world's most celebrated wine estates. Widely regarded as one of the finest Bordeaux vintages of the 1980s, the 1986 Mouton Rothschild has become legendary among collectors and wine enthusiasts, further enhancing the historical significance of the label and its accompanying artwork. This poster perfectly illustrates the unique identity of Château Mouton Rothschild, where viticulture, culture and artistic patronage have been inseparably linked for generations. The combination of Bernard Séjourné's poetic imagery, the prestige of Pauillac's First Growth vineyard, and the historical importance of Baron Philippe de Rothschild's long stewardship make this work particularly appealing to collectors of wine memorabilia...

Original 1987 Hans Erni Château Mouton Rothschild Poster, Pauillac

Original 1987 Hans Erni Château Mouton Rothschild Poster, Pauillac

By Hans Erni

Located in PARIS, FR

This elegant original poster reproduces the celebrated 1987 Château Mouton Rothschild label, created by the renowned Swiss artist Hans Erni for one of Bordeaux's most prestigious First Growth estates. Since 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild has invited leading international artists to create original artworks for each vintage label, establishing one of the most remarkable collaborations between the worlds of fine art and fine wine. Contributors to this legendary series include artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, and Keith Haring. For the 1987 vintage, the commission was entrusted to Hans Erni (1909–2015), one of Switzerland's most celebrated twentieth-century artists. Known for his refined line work and humanist vision, Erni created a composition centered around the portrait of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, framed by stylized vines and clusters of grapes symbolizing the vineyard that he transformed into an international icon. The vintage holds exceptional historical significance within the history of the estate. The label bears the moving dedication written by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild: "À mon père, le Baron Philippe de Rothschild, rénovateur de Mouton, je dédie ce millésime de sa 65ème et dernière vendange." The inscription commemorates the 65th and final harvest overseen by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who passed away in 1988 after more than six decades guiding the destiny of Mouton Rothschild and elevating the château to its legendary status within the world of wine. Another phrase appears beneath the dedication: "Mouton ne change." This echoes the estate's famous motto, coined after Mouton Rothschild finally obtained First Growth status in the Bordeaux Classification revision of 1973: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change." (First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change.) The poster therefore represents far more than a wine advertisement; it stands as a tribute to one of the most influential figures in modern Bordeaux history and marks the transition from Baron Philippe de Rothschild to his daughter Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who would continue the family's stewardship of the estate for decades to come. Combining the prestige of Pauillac's First Growth Château Mouton Rothschild, the artistry of Hans Erni, and the emotional significance of a historic final vintage, this poster occupies a unique place at the intersection of fine art, wine history and twentieth-century French cultural heritage. Today, original Mouton Rothschild artist posters are highly sought after by collectors of wine memorabilia...
