About the Item

"Flowers," Michael De Feo, 2019 Silkscreen on 320 gram Coventry Rag paper Dimensions: 30.25" x 22.5" An edition of 50 Signed and numbered by the Artist in pencil This silkscreen print edition was produced in 2019 to coincide with the release of Michael's monograph, "Flowers," published by Abrams Books. “The first time I met ‘The Flower Guy’ he was up on a ladder working on a gigantic shadow project – a ghostly image that literally wrapped around the side of the building that housed the Ridgefield Artists’ Guild. It was spectacular. Little did I know that Michael was simultaneously expanding a new body of work that, unlike his shadow figures, revolved around a painting of a flower. Introduced by Richard Klein, exhibitions director at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum – he also happens to be a brilliant networker -- Michael and I got to work soon thereafter. In my silkscreen studio, an old converted horse barn that sat on top of a hill just outside the town of Ridgefield, we printed Michael’s flowers in multiple sizes and colors, on all sorts of different things: maps, floor plans, diagrams… everything that Michael collected. At the time, Michael was traveling widely and sharing the imagery with the new cities and towns he visited. His reputation was growing and Michael’s work was rapidly gaining international recognition. It wasn’t long before galleries came calling, commissions were proposed, books were published…. I’ll never forget that, immediately following Hurricane Katrina, Michael arrived on my doorstep. We went back to work. Michael got on a plane the next day and flew down to New Orleans and did his best to brighten the lives of those devastated by the storm. Michael’s flowers are vibrant, you see. They echo the personality… the thoughtful consciousness of their creator. I love the fact that Michael’s flowers are still out there – you always know one when you see one. You’re always happy to discover one in an unexpected place. I’m so proud of the fact that I had the opportunity to work with Michael years ago and I look forward to the time when we will work together again.” - Gary Lichtenstein

In 1984, Eric Orr and Keith Haring joined forces to create a series of chalk drawings in the NYC subways. As their work evolved, the artists shifted their focus from the subway to the studio and embarked on the production of a suite of drawings. Included in the group was Repeat which had made its first appearance in the 23rd Street IRT uptown station. Little did Orr and Haring know that the reimagined drawing would be auctioned at Christie’s six years later. 2020 heralds a new beginning for Repeat, a truly unique silkscreen print that both illustrates and celebrates a fierce friendship that began in the early 1980s at The Roxy roller rink in NYC, when two young artists decided to trade t-shirts on the dance floor. Although the exact location is unclear, both agree that it would have been at either Fashion Moda or the Writers’ Bench at 149th Street and Grand Concourse. Founded by Stefan Eins in 1978, Fashion Moda began as a “cultural concept” whose principles revolved around the fact that art can be made by anyone, anywhere and art should be accessible to anyone, anywhere. Located in the South Bronx, Fashion Moda embraced new talent and encouraged creative production across all mediums. The gallery has been credited as a major force behind the recognition of graffiti writing as an art form and it played a pivotal role in a community where Hip Hop was rapidly emerging. CRASH was only 19 years old when he curated “Graffiti Art Success for America” at Fashion Moda and his varied experiences at the gallery would later inspire his founding of WALLWORKS. The 149th Street Writers’ Bench, located at the back of the uptown...
