About the Item

A weathered two-panel South Asian teakwood temple or haveli door, mostly likely from India or Indonesia. The piece features exuberant hand-carved high-relief foliate ornamentation and vivid polychrome paint. Each door panel has a shaped top with a built in hinge remnant on the end. The front presents layered fields of carved cartouches, rosettes, and scrolling arabesques, adorned by a central crab on the top and a phoenix on the bottom carved in a dramatic ornamental field. The surface retains an original and timeworn palette of robins-egg blue, verdigris green, and cinnabar red, accented by chalky gesso and ochre touches. The surface has been weathered over time, creating an authentic and attractive patina with pleasing variation. A striking piece functional as a room divider, window shutters, courtyard doors, wall panel, or architectural element. Modern battens on reverse for stability. Each panel measures 16.5" wide. Sold as a pair from an estate in San Francisco, CA.
