About the Item

A Baroque stove plate (Ofenplatte), dated 1741. Cast iron, in relief. A crowned eagle is shown displayed, a quartered shield on its breast. The date 1741 is split to either side of the crown. Scrollwork fills the lower corners. The whole sits within a moulded rectangular border. The long sides are notched for setting into a stove or fireplace. Plates of this type were cast for tiled and iron stoves. Arms were a common subject when a plate was made for a particular house or office.
