A tall French pedestal column in ebonized wood from the late 19th century, circa 1880, with a beautifully worn matte black patina and a quietly sculptural presence.
Design
The pedestal has a restrained architectural silhouette: a square top, a turned central column and a stepped square base. Over time the black surface has softened naturally, with subtle rubbing, small marks and areas of wear that give it an authentic, layered character. The ebonized finish and clean vertical lines fit the Aesthetic Movement taste of the late 19th century, when black, ebonized furniture was highly fashionable in France and England, while its simplicity feels very contemporary today.
A useful scale
At 109 cm high it has an elegant and practical height. It is tall enough to display a substantial ceramic vessel, a sculpture, a bust, a lamp or a simple branch arrangement, and it creates height and focus in a room without taking up much floor space. Place it in a corner, beside a window, at the end of a hallway or next to a sofa, or use a pair of pedestals to frame a doorway or fireplace.
Condition
Good antique condition. The timeworn surface, rubbing, small marks, irregularities and visible wear are part of its authentic character. Please see the photos for details.
Dimensions: height 109 cm, width 29 cm, depth 29 cm.
In the interior
The simple form allows the pedestal to work equally well in a refined French interior, a quiet contemporary setting, a gallery-like space or a collected wabi-sabi room. It is not just a support but a sculptural object in its own right, and the black patina gives a strong graphic accent against white or plastered walls, natural stone and pale wood. Interior designers who like to mix antique pieces with modern architecture, in the spirit of Axel Vervoordt or Vincent Van Duysen, often use pedestals like this one to display ceramics and found objects.
