About the Item

Exceptional large Mid-Century Modern Italian ceramic flower-form bowl attributed to Aldo Londi for Bitossi, imported to the United States by Rosenthal-Netter, circa 1960s. #5722 The substantial 13-inch bowl is modeled as an exuberant open blossom, with a broad scalloped perimeter forming a series of overlapping petals. The interior is extensively hand-incised with radiating linear decoration extending outward from the circular flower center, creating a wonderfully graphic and highly sculptural surface. Finished in a brilliant sunflower-yellow glaze, the bowl displays subtle dark speckling and variations in the glaze that accentuate the incised decoration and handcrafted character of the ceramic. The combination of saturated color, organic form and strongly textured surface is characteristic of Italian modernist ceramics of the period. The underside retains its original Rosenthal-Netter paper label identifying the piece as created in Italy for Rosenthal-Netter Inc., along with a handwritten model/design number appearing to read “93/5.” Rosenthal-Netter was an important American distributor of Italian ceramics and marketed numerous designs produced by Bitossi during Aldo Londi's tenure as the firm's influential artistic director. Documented Bitossi/Rosenthal-Netter pieces survive with comparable handwritten model-number markings. The dramatic flower form, unusually large 13-inch scale and vibrant yellow glaze make this a particularly decorative example of 1960s Italian pottery. Ideal as a centerpiece, fruit bowl, vide-poche or simply displayed as a sculptural object. Circa: 1960s Designer: Aldo Londi, attributed Maker: Bitossi Distributor: Rosenthal-Netter Origin: Italy Dimensions: 13" diameter × 3" high Condition: Very good vintage condition with minor surface wear and natural glaze irregularities consistent with age and handcrafted ceramic production. Note: The original Rosenthal-Netter label establishes the Italian origin and Rosenthal-Netter distribution. The Bitossi/Aldo Londi attribution is based on the form, decoration, markings and comparison with documented period examples.
