About the Item

19th Century Puglian Large Glazed Terracotta Serving Platter with Hand-Painted Rose Motif Authentic late 19th century large glazed terracotta serving platter from Puglia, Southern Italy, hand-thrown and hand-painted within the region’s long tradition of domestic ceramic production. This antique Puglian platter features a cream-glazed ground framed by cobalt blue concentric lines and a bold hand-painted rose motif at the center, rendered in deep red tones with green foliate brushwork. The generous scale suggests its original use as a large serving dish or communal table platter, made for presenting food within the rhythms of Southern Italian domestic life. The central rose is a highly recognizable decorative motif in Puglian folk ceramics, often associated with beauty, abundance, hospitality, and the symbolic language of the rural home. Its expressive, almost calligraphic brushwork reflects the immediacy of handmade 19th century pottery, where floral motifs were not painted with academic precision but with gesture, confidence, and regional character. The blue rim and circular bands create a visual frame that gives structure to the open surface, allowing the red rose to become the clear focal point of the piece. The surface reveals subtle glaze variation, firing marks, age-related wear, and the irregularities characteristic of authentic antique Puglian ceramics. Today, this large antique Puglian serving platter works beautifully as a wall-hung decorative piece, a cabinet display object, a sculptural tabletop accent, or a dramatic serving platter for dry foods and display use. Its scale, vivid rose decoration, and Mediterranean palette bring warmth, color, and timeless Southern Italian character to both rustic and contemporary interiors.
