About the Item

XIX Century Wooden Laquered Oriental Box This wonderful object depicted is an antique cylindrical box with a lid, technically classified as a lacquered wooden artefact, typically used as a powder box or a container for small precious items. It is made of hand-painted wood, a fine and durable material widely used in Europe during the 19th century for objects in an Oriental style. The surface is treated with a glossy black lacquer (often referred to as ‘japanning’ in European productions), which serves as both a protective and decorative base. It features polychrome and gilded figurative scenes. The technique is reminiscent of Japanese maki-e (‘sprinkled painting’), where metallic powders and pigments are applied to the lacquer whilst it is still wet. The main scene depicts a female figure in traditional Japanese dress (bijin), seated or kneeling in an interior, surrounded by classical architectural elements such as screens or flower-adorned fences. In terms of iconography, the main figure is holding what appears to be a scroll or a fan, elements typical of the literary and artistic culture of the Edo or Meiji periods. The object is in the style of 19th-century Chineserie or Japonism, particularly from the era of Napoleon III (c. 1850–1880), a period in which a fascination with Eastern aesthetics led to the creation of numerous everyday objects featuring such decorations.
