About the Item

A hand-painted polychrome enamel plaque dominates the front cover of this Continental silver cigarette case, depicting an intimate boudoir scene. The composition features a smiling young woman undressing beside a dressing screen, wearing black stockings and gathering a white chemise around her hips. Her figure is captured from the front while her bare back is reflected in a tall mirror behind her, framed by a draped floral curtain, architectural moulding, and a small chair. The rectangular case is constructed in 900-grade silver, indicated by the '900' fineness mark stamped clearly upon the external thumbpiece, accompanied by partially rubbed, indistinct Continental silver assay marks. Designed with softly rounded corners and a polished, plain silver reverse, the case relies on a neatly assembled four-piece barrel hinge running along the bottom edge for strength and precise closure. Opening by pressing the sprung thumbpiece catch reveals a gilded interior. This warm gold-wash or vermeil lining was customary in luxury tobacco accessories produced circa 1900, serving to protect the cigarettes from metallic taint while preventing silver tarnish. Measuring 8.6 cm in width by 7.1 cm in height, the pocket-sized container reflects the high demand for discreet, artistic novelty cases during the early twentieth century. The painted enamel panel retains its crisp clarity and vibrant colour palette across the figures and drapery, set securely flush within the plain silver bezel. Minor age-appropriate rubbing, faint surface abrasions, and light handling marks are present on the exterior silver surfaces, while the hinge and closure remain in good functional order.
