About the Item

A highly decorative 18th-century Italian Baroque ecclesiastical candle stand, finely carved in limewood and finished with gesso and rich gold gilding. The stand is raised on three dramatically scrolled legs terminating in carved animal-paw feet, creating the theatrical and sculptural silhouette characteristic of Southern European Baroque ecclesiastical furnishings. Originally conceived for use within a church or altar setting, the piece combines architectural carving with an elegantly elongated form. The surviving gilt surface provides warmth, texture and the aged character associated with period ecclesiastical objects. Standing an impressive 91 cm high, the candle stand has considerable decorative presence and would make a striking addition to a classical, Baroque or eclectic interior.
