About the Item

An exceptionally elegant pair of George III ormolu, patinated bronze and white marble griffin candlesticks, after the celebrated design by Sir William Chambers (1723–1796), architect to King George III. English, circa 1790. Each candlestick is centred by a finely modelled seated winged griffin in dark patinated bronze, its head raised and wings outstretched. Behind, the griffin's tail develops into a particularly elegant ormolu acanthus scroll, intertwined with further scrolling gilt-bronze ornament. Rising above the griffin is a turned ormolu candle branch supporting a finely chased urn-shaped nozzle decorated with classical anthemion and foliate ornament. The whole is raised upon a rectangular white marble pedestal edged with a finely cast ormolu leaf border and resting upon a further stepped marble plinth. The model derives from one of Sir William Chambers's most celebrated designs for decorative objects. Chambers, architect to George III and one of the leading exponents of the English Neoclassical style, produced designs for furniture, metalwork and decorative objects alongside his architectural commissions. The design for the griffin candlestick was conceived considerably earlier than its eventual publication in the third edition of Chambers's Treatise on the Decorative Parts of Civil Architecture in 1791. An early presentation drawing by Chambers's pupil and assistant John Yenn survives, while closely related examples dating from the 1760s are known. Chambers described the published plate as including ornamental objects designed for the Earl of Charlemont, Lord Melbourne and for his own house. The griffin, a mythological creature associated with Apollo and particularly suited to the emerging Neoclassical taste, became one of the most distinctive motifs associated with Chambers's decorative work. Early versions of the model have been associated with the bronzier Diederich Nicolaus Anderson, who executed high-quality ormolu work for Chambers. A particularly attractive and well-proportioned pair of this important English Neoclassical model, combining the contrasting surfaces of dark patinated bronze, richly gilded ormolu and white marble. England, circa 1790.
