Set of 3 Unique Vasijas Para Sembrar Agua, Red Vessels by Soledad Christie. One Of a Kind. Dimensions: Left: W 7 x D 7 x H 13 cm. Center: W 14 x D 9 x H 19.5 cm. Right: W 20 x D 13 x H 27 cm. Materials: Low-temperature, burnished earthenware ceramic. Due to their porosity these pieces are not suitable for holding water. The pieces are low-temperature, burnished earthenware ceramic pieces. They are one-of-a-kind hand-built, sculptural vessels using the traditional techniques of pinching, coiling and paddling. In order to achieve a tactile surface, each piece is burnished with a small river stone several times during the drying process. Each piece undergoes an initial low-temperature gas kiln firing and then the black pieces undergo a secondary reduction firing; the traditional open-sky firing, using llama and goat dung as fuel. Artist Bio: Soledad Christie. I was born in 1962 in Viña del Mar, Chile. I have lived in San Pedro de Atacama for almost 30 years. Surrounded by a vast and amazing landscape, I connect with the strength of an ancient local language: pre-Columbian pottery. My work is deeply rooted in the ancestral pre-Columbian monochrome pottery tradition and its ancient shaping, burnishing, and firing processes. My close relationship with clay is essential to my work. During the slowness of the process of shaping each piece is where my hands do the thinking, and I find a sort of rhythm among volume, form, and silhouettes; stillness, movement, and balance. Forms and silhouettes come in an intuitive way. I make one-of-a-kind hand-built sculptural vessels using the traditional techniques of pinching, coiling, and paddling. In order to achieve a tactile surface, each piece is burnished with a small river stone several times during the drying process. Each piece undergoes an initial low-temperature gas kiln firing and then the black pieces undergo a secondary reduction firing: the traditional open-sky firing, using llama and goat dung as fuel. Through an ongoing relationship with clay, my work is meant to express intuitions and sensations that are constantly present when inhabiting the vast Atacama Desert and Altiplano territory and its outstanding atmosphere. The territory has become a part of my own identity; silence, solitude, and vastness have shaped me and my work immensely.
