About the Item

An exceptional, large-scale turn-of-the-century Austrian bronze equestrian desk box, expertly cast in the lifelike form of a horse’s head with detailed harness, bridle, and bit. Stamped AUSTRIA along the lower base rim, this piece originates from the peak of the Viennese bronze foundry tradition (circa 1890s–1910s). During the turn of the century, Viennese foundries—including those associated with master sculptors like Franz Bergmann and Carl Kauba—specialized in highly realistic, tactile equestrian and animalier table accessories crafted for elite European and export markets. The upper portion of the head lifts on a smooth rear hinge to reveal a contoured interior cavity fitted with a soft blue velvet cushion pad. Designed as a gentleman’s desktop valet or pocket watch holder, the plush velvet protected fine timepieces and jewelry from surface scratches when resting on a library desk or dressing table. Standing a commanding 11 inches high with an 11.25-inch depth, the sculpture showcases magnificent modeling throughout—from the defined muscle structure and flowing mane to the textured leather-like graining on the harness straps. Dimensions: Height: 11" H Width: 8 1/8" W (8.125") Depth: 11 1/4" D (11.25") Details: Origin: Austria (Viennese Bronze Workshop) Period: Circa 1890s–1910s Style: Victorian / Edwardian Equestrian / Vienna Bronze Materials: Cast Bronze, Blue Velvet Lining, Brass Hardware Markings: Stamped AUSTRIA on lower base rim Excellent antique condition. The cast bronze features a rich, multi-tonal brown patina with light, age-appropriate surface wear and soft highlight rubbing along raised edges. The internal hinge opens and closes securely. The interior blue velvet pad shows light historic wear but remains soft, intact, and clean.
