About the Item

Rare Polish Vanitas Memento Mori Bronze Bust of Teofil Lenartowicz, Late 19th Century An unusual and highly evocative Vanitas Memento Mori bust depicting the celebrated Polish Romantic poet, ethnographer, sculptor, and patriot Teofil Lenartowicz (1822–1893). Cast in patinated bronze with a rich blackened finish revealing warm golden highlights beneath, the sculpture conceals a striking secret: the moustached likeness of Lenartowicz detaches to reveal a meticulously carved skull within. The removable face may be displayed separately, suspended from one of the side hooks, or positioned beside the bust, creating a dramatic and thought-provoking presentation. At the base is a sculpted scroll inscribed “Lirenka”, the title of Lenartowicz’s most celebrated volume of poetry, first published in 1855. This literary reference adds an additional layer of symbolism, linking artistic achievement with the fleeting nature of human existence. Dating from the late 19th century, this remarkable Polish sculpture is a powerful example of the Vanitas tradition. Vanitas artworks served as reminders of life's brevity, the futility of worldly pleasures, and the certainty of death. From the Renaissance onwards, the skull became one of the most enduring symbols of mortality, encouraging contemplation of the passage of time and the inevitability of human fate. Combining portraiture, symbolism, and mechanical ingenuity, this exceptional piece is both a fascinating conversation object and a rare example of Central European Memento Mori art. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear and a richly aged patina consistent with its period. Terracotta Memento Mori Skull Sculpture, Italy 17th Century

Terracotta Memento Mori Skull Sculpture, Italy 17th Century

Located in Nottingham, GB

A rare and highly evocative European memento mori terracotta sculpture depicting a human skull resting upon a rocky outcrop, entwined with serpents and surmounted by a distinctive lock of hair. Dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, the piece is likely of German origin. Beautifully modelled and painted in naturalistic tones, the skull is rendered in warm earthy hues, contrasting with the dark green serpents that coil through and around the cranium. The rocky base is finished in rich brown tones, enhancing the sculpture's dramatic presence and symbolic depth. Memento mori, Latin for “remember that you must die,” was a powerful artistic and philosophical motif throughout Europe, serving as a reminder of the transience of earthly life and the certainty of mortality. Here, the skull embodies death, decay, and the fleeting nature of human existence, while the entwined serpents symbolise transformation, renewal, healing, and the eternal cycle of life. Together they create a compelling allegory of mortality and rebirth, where death itself becomes a gateway to regeneration. A striking and unusual example of early European memento mori art...
