About the Item

Rare and finely modeled polychrome terracotta bust of an Arab, bearing the impressed mark “R St K” for Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel, together with the model number 1525. The bust is remarkable for the exceptional delicacy of its modeling. The finely rendered facial features, expressive gaze, and carefully articulated beard give the figure a particularly lively and characterful presence, characteristic of the refined Orientalist production of the late 19th century. The polychrome decoration enhances the richness of the costume and contributes to the striking visual presence of the sculpture. Condition: Good overall condition, with some chips to the garment and beard, as shown in the photographs. Dimensions: Height: 46 cm (18.1 in.) Width: 32 cm (12.6 in.) Depth: 18 cm (7.1 in.) Bibliography: A similar model is illustrated in Stéphane Richemond, Terres cuites africanistes et orientalistes, Éditions de l'Amateur, p. 127. Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel Eduard Stellmacher, son of the renowned ceramicist Alfred Stellmacher (1837–1906), was born in 1868; the exact date of his death remains unknown. Like his father, Eduard was a sculptor and became involved in the family ceramic enterprise. The manufacture was subsequently developed in association with Hans Riessner, a painter, his brother Karl Riessner, and Joseph Kessel, who were both employees and sons-in-law of Alfred Stellmacher. Their production became particularly renowned for its ivory-white porcelain and finely modeled figural works, including Orientalist subjects. From 1894, the factory employed approximately 250 workers and maintained shops in both Paris and Berlin. In 1896, the company officially adopted the name Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel (R St K). Eduard Stellmacher's manufacture eventually declared bankruptcy in 1910 and was liquidated two years later, in 1912. This rare Orientalist bust is an evocative example of the highly refined figural ceramic production associated with the Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel workshops at the turn of the 20th century.
