About the Item

17th century Italian wood-painted figure of Christ (Provence of Lucca, Tuscany) on a coordinating smoky crystal quartz in matrix base. In Easter celebrations of the Italian Catholic church, the figure of Christ is removed from the cross after Good Friday and laid on the stone on Saturday to then be removed on Sunday, representing the resurrection of Jesus. This piece was created by the artist of Interi as an interpretation of this tradition. The last photo represents Christ on the stone in the Church of Sanit Apostoli in Florence, Italy. Built in the 11th century, it is one of the oldest church buildings in the city. The piece is created by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she created the piece and the period shows that the figure of Christ is originally 17th century. The Italian crucifix is preserved and transformed into a figurative, contemporary work of art. Combined with the natural elements, it becomes a sculptural work of historic and organic significance.
