About the Item

This finely carved and richly polychromed sculpture represents the Virgin of the Martyrs (Virgen de los Mártires de la Pera), a devotional image from the Peruvian Colonial School dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. Carved in wood and finished with original polychromy, the Virgin is portrayed frontally holding the Christ Child in one hand and the symbolic pear in the other, attributes traditionally associated with this Marian devotion. Her floral-painted robes, serene expression and flowing mantle reflect the refinement of Andean colonial carving while preserving the strong devotional character for which these sculptures are renowned. The sculpture retains its original metal crown and stands on its original carved base. The work has undergone an extensive professional conservation treatment. The restoration stabilized historic structural issues, consolidated the wood, and carefully reintegrated losses while preserving the sculpture's historic integrity and original devotional composition. Evidence of age, historic repairs and restoration remains visible, consistent with an object of more than three centuries. Dimensions 95x30x42 cm A rare and highly decorative example of Peruvian Colonial sacred art, suitable for important collections of Spanish Colonial, Latin American or ecclesiastical works.

Colonial Peruvian Maguey Wood Virgin with Silver Crown, 18th Century

Colonial Peruvian Maguey Wood Virgin with Silver Crown, 18th Century

Located in Madrid, ES

A striking Colonial Peruvian devotional sculpture depicting the Virgin of the Rosary, carved in maguey wood and presented with an impressive antique silver crown and richly layered textiles. Created within the artistic traditions of the Andean world, the sculpture reflects the distinctive fusion of Spanish Baroque devotional models and local craftsmanship that characterized religious art in Colonial Peru. Particularly noteworthy is the use of maguey wood, a lightweight material traditionally employed in Andean sculpture and strongly associated with the religious imagery produced in Peru and the Cuzco region. The figure displays a serene and expressive face, glass eyes, delicately modelled hands and a commanding vertical presence. Its imposing silhouette is enhanced by elaborate period and later textiles, recreating the appearance these devotional images would have presented in churches, chapels and private oratories throughout the colonial period. The sculpture is accompanied by a substantial antique Peruvian silver...
