About the Item

A fringed Middle Eastern carpet forms the integral plinth of this Austrian cold-painted bronze sculpture, cast in crisp relief with geometric motifs and polychrome enamelling. Standing atop the rug in pointed red slippers, the female figure is depicted in traditional Orientalist dress, wearing voluminous gathered trousers tied with tasseled cords, a patterned bodice, a trailing dark cloak, and a conical headdress wrapped in drapery. In her hands she balances a circular serving tray set with two small tea cups. The piece demonstrates the specialised cold-painting technique refined by Viennese foundries around 1900. Unlike traditionally patinated bronzes, cold-painted figures were cast and meticulously chased before layers of oil-based enamel pigments were applied without kiln firing. This method preserved the sharp detail of the chased fabric folds, tasselling, and facial features, while yielding rich, opaque tones across the garments and the decorative rug border. Franz Xavier Bergman (1861–1936) directed the most famous of the Vienna bronze workshops producing these decorative figures. His father had established a metal workshop in Vienna in 1860, and the younger Bergman opened his dedicated foundry at the turn of the twentieth century, achieving international recognition for naturalistic wildlife models and romanticised Middle Eastern genre figures. Authentic foundry casts were impressed with the distinct Bergman mark showing an uppercase letter 'B' within an amphora vase. The sculpture measures 22.5 cm in height, with the carpet base measuring approximately 12 cm wide by 17 cm deep. The underside retains the clear, stamped amphora mark. The original painted surface remains remarkably intact, displaying only light, scattered rubbing consistent with gentle handling over time. We ship internationally, tracked.
