About the Item

Standing in a self-assured posture with hands clasped behind the tails of his coat, this character figure leans gently against a tapered support post upon a canted rectangular plinth. The subject is depicted in traditional dress, sporting a tilted brimmed hat, high-collared shirt, double-breasted waistcoat, tailcoat, knee breeches, and buckled shoes. Crafted in fine vitreous porcelain, the body is finished in a bright ivory-white glaze. Delicate gilded lines accent the lapels, waistcoat hems, cuffs, hat trim, and shoe buckles, while the head is enriched with soft enamelled flesh tones, expressive facial painting, and auburn-tinted hair. Modelled by chief sculptor James Hadley as pattern number 835, the figure belongs to the celebrated 'Countries from Around the World' series produced by the Worcester factory during the late nineteenth century. Hadley's series sought to depict distinct national and regional characters through finely observed costume and expressive portraiture. The underside carries comprehensive factory markings, including the printed puce Royal Worcester crown and circle mark for 1882, an impressed diamond registration mark, the incised shape number 835, and an impressed letter code. The figurine measures 18 cm in height and remains in sound order, free from chips, cracks, hairlines, or ceramic restoration. We ship internationally, tracked.
