Art Deco sculptural table lamp "Clarté" by Max Le Verrier (French, 1891–1973) Signed in cast Le Verrier One of Le Verrier’s most famous works, referred to also as the Biba Girl, "Clarte" depicts a nude female standing tall, lithe and graceful with outstretched arms offering her light to illuminate any space. She is the epitome of classic stylized Art Deco design combining form and function. Max Le Verrier was born on January 29, 1891 in Neuilly -sur-Seine, a suburb near Paris, France. As a French sculptor , he was best known for his elegant figurines and lamps crafted in the Art Deco style. He served in the French army during World War I and was shot down by German fighter planes and sent to a prison camp. After the war he studied in The Ecole des Beaux - Arts in Geneva, Switzerland were he met and collaborated with fellow artists Pierre Lefaguays and Marcel Bouraine. Returning to France in 1918, Le Verrier opened his own atelier and achieved much success with his sculpture during the 1920s and 1930s. He opened his own foundry and continued his art. His concentration on sculpting the ideal female form was evident in his work as there was a popular public fascination with this too during the Art Deco era. Clarte was made in four sizes from three live models. At the 1925 Paris L' Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels, Le Verrier received a gold metal. He was also awarded a medal of honor at the Paris International Exhibition in 1937. During the WWII Nazi occupation of Paris, he fled to the South of France bearing a fake identity. After the fighting ceased in 1944, Le Verrier again returned to his homeland where he lived and continued to sculpt until his death on June 6, 1973 at the age of 82. His works are highly sought after. Re electrified for US specs. Holds one small candelabra based night light bulb.
