About the Item

Song To Ming Dynasty Cizhou Glazed And Decorated Storage Jar Northern China. The name comes from Cizhou in Hebei province, but the workshops spread across the north — Henan, Shanxi, Shandong. Hebei and Henan were the heartland. Circa 960 to 1640. Height 26 inches. Diameter 20 inches. Condition: commensurate with age and use. Ancient chips to lip with no damage or repairs detected. This Cizhou-type storage jar rises in a powerful ovoid form, twenty five inches tall with a twenty-inch diameter that commands the room it occupies. The body wears a rich cream-white slip, its surface softened by centuries into a patina that glows like old bone under light. Against that luminous ground, four bold black-glazed characters stand in confident calligraphy, each stroke deliberate, each one a fragment of a story the jar has kept since it was sealed in a tomb or cellar long ago. Flowing around them, scrolling floral and vine motifs unfurl in the same dark iron oxide, their curves echoing the jar’s own swelling silhouette. The condition is exceptional for something this old, with no hairlines, no restoration, just the honest wear of time: soft mineral blooms, a faint craze in the glaze, the quiet evidence of survival. Cizhou ware was the people’s porcelain, made for storage, not display, which is exactly why so few reached us intact. This one did. It is not a museum piece behind glass. It is a vessel that held grain or wine for a family, watched over a household, and now waits for someone who understands that the most beautiful objects are the ones that were meant to be used. AVANTIQUES offers an exclusive, carefully curated collection of fine art, paintings, bronzes, Asian treasures, art glass, and antiques. Every piece in our inventory is selected for its enduring quality, blue chip investment value, and timeless decorative appeal. We deal exclusively in original antiques—never reproductions.
