About the Item

An early 20th-century Art Nouveau ceramic jardiniere by Thomas Forester & Sons, produced in England as part of the manufacturer's Phoenix Ware collection. This small, rounded planter belongs to the 'Athens' range, distinguished by its elaborate relief decoration and contrasting glazes. The bulbous, urn-shaped body features a continuous arrangement of deeply moulded acanthus leaves and spiralling foliate scrolls. The raised decoration is finished in a vibrant amber-orange glaze, contrasted against areas of muted brown and gray, creating a sense of movement across the surface. The glaze has a soft satin sheen, accentuating the sculptural quality of the ornamentation without the high gloss typically associated with majolica pottery. Its compact proportions, rounded shoulders and narrow circular opening are characteristic of decorative ceramics produced during the Art Nouveau period. The underside bears the printed Thomas Forester & Sons Phoenix Ware factory mark, together with the 'Athens' pattern name and impressed numerals. Condition: Good antique condition overall. Two hairline cracks extend from small chips on the rim down below the shoulders. Interior wear and glaze crazing consistent with age and use. Dimensions: Height 14 cm (5.51 in) × Diameter 15 cm (5.91 in).

Art Deco Ceramic Vase by Thomas Forester & Sons, Staffordshire, 1930s

By Thomas Forester & Sons

Located in Glasgow, GB

An original Art Deco ceramic vase by Thomas Forester & Sons, crafted in Staffordshire, England during the early 1930s. This distinctive piece belongs to the firm’s ‘Athens’ collection—a short-run series now highly regarded among collectors of British ceramics and Art Deco pottery. The vase is defined by its elongated tubular profile, flaring subtly to form a softly bulging centre. Its surface is decorated with rows of acanthus leaves in pale blue relief, curling rhythmically around the body. The crisp blue detailing sits against a backdrop of deep russet and ochre glazes, a palette typical of Forester’s output in the early 20th century and evocative of the broader Art Deco design movement in Britain. Standing 26 cm tall with a diameter of 14 cm, the vase is stamped to the base with the Phoenix Ware...
