About the Item

An elegantly carved stone vessel, once part of the founding collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Alabastra - small, ovoid vessels used to hold precious oils, perfumes, and cosmetics - were widely traded luxury goods in antiquity. Egyptian examples, such as the present, were particularly prized for the beauty of the material and the refinement of their workmanship, and were frequently transported across the Mediterranean through networks of trade and exchange. That this example was discovered in Cyprus attests to the island’s important role as a crossroads between the Near East, Egypt, and the Greek world. Discovered by Luigi Palma di Cesnola (1832-1904) in Cyprus in the 1860s-70s, this piece soon became part of the founding collection of one of the most renowned museums in the world; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Cesnola’s collection soon became known as the most important and comprehensive collection of Cypriot material in the world, and it is still regarded as such today. In 1928, the present piece was deaccessioned by the Museum and subsequently passed into private hands, where it has remained ever since. Cf. Alabaster alabastron, 5-4th century BC, Metropolitan Museum of Art, no. 74.51.5101 Provenance Likely discovered by Luigi Palma di Cesnola in Cyprus, 1860s-70s; Collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, likely acquired from the above in 1872; Collection of Ira Martin, New York, acquired from the above on 12 March 1926; Christie’s, New York, Antiquities, 5 June 1998, Lot 133; Private Collection, thence by descent Condition Minor restoration to a minor chip on one lug handle, otherwise unrestored and in very fine condition.
