About the Item

A striking Art Deco ceramic vase by Beswick, model 656, produced in England during the 1930s. Combining bold geometric form with richly moulded relief decoration, the vase is an expressive example of Beswick’s decorative pottery from the interwar period. The substantial body has a gently flared, sculptural profile, raised on a circular pedestal foot. Its surface is decorated in high relief with a stylised naturalistic motif, picked out in a vivid glossy red glaze against a mottled brown, cream and earthy ground. The contrasting glaze emphasises the depth of the moulding and gives the decoration an almost carved appearance. Around the foot is a repeating band of sharply defined triangular forms finished in deep red, introducing a distinctly geometric Art Deco element to the otherwise organic decoration. The combination of strong colour, relief work and architectural form gives the vase considerable presence from every angle. The underside is impressed with the Beswick factory mark and model number 656, identifying the design within the English pottery's historic production. A particularly decorative piece of 1930s British ceramics, well suited to an Art Deco interior or a collection of early Beswick and English studio and art pottery. Dimensions: Height: 26 cm Width: 23 cm Depth: 15 cm Condition: Good vintage condition with light age-related wear, principally to the underside. No structural concerns noted.

Art Deco Ceramic Vase by Thomas Forester & Sons, Staffordshire, 1930s

Art Deco Ceramic Vase by Thomas Forester & Sons, Staffordshire, 1930s

By Thomas Forester & Sons

Located in Glasgow, GB

An original Art Deco ceramic vase by Thomas Forester & Sons, crafted in Staffordshire, England during the early 1930s. This distinctive piece belongs to the firm’s ‘Athens’ collection—a short-run series now highly regarded among collectors of British ceramics and Art Deco pottery. The vase is defined by its elongated tubular profile, flaring subtly to form a softly bulging centre. Its surface is decorated with rows of acanthus leaves in pale blue relief, curling rhythmically around the body. The crisp blue detailing sits against a backdrop of deep russet and ochre glazes, a palette typical of Forester’s output in the early 20th century and evocative of the broader Art Deco design movement in Britain. Standing 26 cm tall with a diameter of 14 cm, the vase is stamped to the base with the Phoenix Ware...
