About the Item

Moulded in deep relief, this Victorian majolica cheese keeper takes the traditional beehive form, pairing a rich cobalt-blue ground with naturalistic country motifs. The domed cover is encircled around its lower half by a textured woven basketweave band in warm buff tones, while the upper section displays trailing wild rose or apple blossom sprigs in delicate pink with emerald foliage. The top is finished with an arched loop handle modelled in imitation of bound wicker. The matching circular undertray continues the rustic theme, bordered by a wide basketweave flange highlighted with a soft yellow outer rim. Its recessed centre is flooded with the same saturated cobalt glaze as the cover, providing a vibrant contrast when the dome is lifted for service. Produced in the late nineteenth century, probably during the 1880s, the piece represents typical British majolica tableware made for the Victorian dining room or sideboard. Majolica cheese dishes served a practical purpose in keeping farmhouse cheeses cool and protected, while functioning as colourful decorative centrepieces for the luncheon or supper table. The assembled dish measures approximately 21 cm in overall height and 21 cm in diameter across the base plate. The underside of the tray is coated in blue glaze and displays an impressed maker's mark within an octagonal cartouche. Condition is fair to good for lead-glazed earthenware of this period, with bright glaze colours throughout. There is a small chip to the yellow outer rim of the base dish, along with light expected surface wear consistent with age and handling. We ship internationally, tracked.
