About the Item

In this listing you will find an elegant and finely executed Art Nouveau epergne centerpiece, crafted in France circa 1900, combining a richly cast gilt bronze base with exceptional quality engraved crystal elements. The sculptural base is executed in solid bronze with a warm, time-softened gilt finish, displaying a dynamic interplay of scrolling acanthus and vegetal forms. The design bridges late 19th-century Louis XV revival influences with the emerging fluidity of the Art Nouveau movement, resulting in a composition that is both opulent and organically animated. The central standard rises gracefully from a domed foot, flanked by asymmetrical arms that support two shallow crystal bowls, while a tall trumpet-form vase crowns the piece. The glass elements are of particularly high quality, executed in clear crystal with delicate acid-etched and wheel-refined decoration. A continuous motif of stylized tulips and sinuous stems encircles each element, rendered in a soft satin finish that contrasts beautifully with the clarity of the ground. The refinement of the engraving, combined with the purity of the crystal, suggests production by a leading French glasshouse of the period, such as Baccarat or Saint-Louis. The composition retains a harmonious balance between structure and ornament, with the lightness of the glass offsetting the richness of the bronze. CONDITION: Epergne is in an overall good antique condition with barely visible micro-chips on the top glass vase.
