About the Item

A vibrant sky blue border edged in hand-applied gilt frames each piece of this assembled English dinner service, manufactured by Minton in Staffordshire for the luxury London china retailer William Mortlock of Regent Street. The matched ensemble comprises six flat dinner plates, four deep soup or pasta bowls, and a two-handled lidded tureen resting on a dedicated presentation stand. Each item centres a polychrome armorial crest featuring a passant red dragon enclosed within an azure garter buckled with the French motto 'Toujours Prest', meaning 'Always Ready'. Particular craft is evident in the serving ware. The tureen stand incorporates twin integrally moulded loop handles with entwined rope-twist modelling, enriched by applied foliate relief washed in soft turquoise enamel and accented with bright gilding that trails down the rim. Matching twisted scroll handles flank the bowl of the tureen, while the domed cover is crowned by an elaborate bud and leaf finial surrounded by trailing raised foliage. Manufactured across two decades between 1857 and 1877, the components reflect a private household replenishing or expanding an important family table service over time. Ceramic marks beneath the glaze demonstrate these commission phases clearly. The tureen under-plate carries the impressed Minton date cypher for 1857 alongside the Mortlock retailer stamp, while the matching tureen carries the Mortlock London backstamp. Four dinner plates and two bowls display impressed Minton date marks for 1865 alongside printed retailer marks. Two further plates and two bowls carry the printed retailer cartouche 'Mintons China From William Mortlock', with three pieces bearing Minton factory stamps dating to 1877. In terms of scale, the six dinner plates and four bowls each measure 25.5 cm in diameter. The tureen stand measures 22 cm across the moulded handles, while the covered tureen stands 15 cm high and measures 17 cm across its side handles. The complete assembled service has a combined weight of 7.57 kg. We ship internationally, tracked. Please see our other items for sale, where we combine shipping on multiple lots.
