About the Item

Pair of cup and saucer sets features multicolor abstract flower decors on lightly textured, semi-transparent fine porcelain blanks. The rims are decorated with thin marigold yellow rims, and the cups' handles are adorned with a single graphic accent in the same yellow color. The cups and saucers were created by Spode & Copeland for Plummer Ltd, New York. W. H. Plummer & Co Ltd. operated in 1st half of 20thcentury as a high-end retailer or department store in New York, NY, specializing in antique and modern English china, crystal, and silverware. It was located on 7&9 East 35th Street, New York, and opened the 2nd retail location on 696 5th Avenue, New York, in 1936. Cups and saucers are marked with green underglaze manufacturer backmark "Spode Copelands China England" that was in use as printed mark on porcelains from 1891 (mark 1077 on p. 172, see reference) up to mid 20th century, brown overglaze mark "Plummer Ltd 7&9 East 35th Street, New York", and red overglaze model numbers. Taking into consideration Plummer Ltd expansion to multiple locations, the marks date the pieces to 1900-1936. Rare, hard to find set would make a great gift for a porcelain collector or a New York history enthusiast.

Haviland Limoges Hand Painted Pair of Porcelain Cups & Saucers, France 1894-1931

Haviland Limoges Hand Painted Pair of Porcelain Cups & Saucers, France 1894-1931

By Haviland & Co.

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Set of 2 demitasse cups and 2 saucers was made by Haviland & Cie in Limoges, France. The Art Deco style form of a footed cups, with 3 small ball feet, is rather rare and hard to find, especially in coffee or demitasse size. In this set the pieces were hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio with Victorian style motif of pink English roses. Calm light pink and green colors are accentuated by bright gold rims and gold trim on handles and ball feet; crisp white color of semi-translucent porcelain showcases the soft, delicate decor without overpowering it. The pieces are marked with green underglaze manufacturer mark Haviland France that dates to 1894-1931. The set is in very good antique condition with minimal wear on gold that is appropriate to its age. The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. Undecorated Haviland china...
