About the Item

Spode Greek Pattern Blue Printed Pearlware Oval Tazza, Neoclassical This oval footed tazza is of pearlware printed in underglaze blue in Spode's Greek pattern, introduced in 1806. The shaped oval top, its rim softly lobed, is raised on a spreading oval pedestal foot. The center is filled by a large cartouche-shaped panel containing a classical scene: two standing draped figures approach a seated figure, the nearer of them holding up a circular mirror or patera, with a tall footed krater at the left and a large rosette-centered disc at the right, and rosettes scattered through the field. The border follows the arrangement standard to the pattern and is worth reading closely, because it is what distinguishes Greek from ordinary transferware. Four classical vases, constant in both design and position throughout an entire service, alternate with four shaped panels of classical figures which vary from piece to piece; the whole is set against a sheet ground of vine leaves and grapes that continues down over the foot. No two pieces of a Greek service therefore carry quite the same combination of images. The neoclassical Greek pattern, introduced in 1806, catered to the demand for classical subjects created by the Greek Revival style, and was probably the first multi-scene pattern introduced at the Spode factory. Tazze and other footed dessert forms are less commonly met with than the plates and dishes that make up the bulk of a surviving service. Dimensions Length: 11¼ inches (28.6 cm) Width: 8¼ inches (21.0 cm) Height: 3 inches (7.6 cm) Marks Underglaze blue workman's mark, a circle with an arrow. No factory name mark, which is usual for Greek pattern wares of this date; many recorded examples carry only a workman's mark or none at all. Condition Report The tazza is in good antique condition, with a small frit to the rim at the ten o'clock position. Historical Context Spode's Greek pattern was introduced in 1806 and was probably the first multi-scene pattern the factory produced. Its center designs were adapted from three publications that between them recorded Sir William Hamilton's collection of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan vases: d'Hancarville's The Complete Collection of Antiquities from the Cabinet of Sir William Hamilton, in four volumes from 1767 to 1776; Wilhelm Tischbein's Collection of Engravings from Ancient Vases of Greek Workmanship, in three volumes from 1791; and Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the Late Sir William Hamilton, drawn and engraved by Kirk and published in 1804. Nicholas Moore has identified more than forty different center scenes in the series, all set against the same vine-leaf sheet ground, with the border's four vases holding their design and position while the four figure panels change. The result is a service in which the ornament shifts across the table from piece to piece — an unusually ambitious use of transfer printing at a moment when a pattern more commonly meant a single repeated image, and the reason Greek pattern has held collectors' attention since.
