About the Item

A particularly fine German Hanau silver model of a pheasant, circa 1890–1910, naturalistically modeled with exceptionally detailed hand-chased plumage, articulated wings and a removable head. The bird is rendered with remarkable attention to detail, from the individually chased feathers covering the breast and body to the overlapping wing feathers and long, elegantly modeled tail. The head is finely worked with an alert expression, articulated beak and distinctive crest, while the slender legs terminate in realistically modeled feet. Both wings are hinged and may be raised and opened, revealing additional chased featherwork beneath and giving the sculpture an unusual degree of animation. The head is detachable, a characteristic feature found on comparable Hanau silver animal-form vessels of the period, allowing access to the hollow interior. The piece bears a group of Hanau-style pseudo-hallmarks. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Hanau became internationally celebrated for its highly accomplished silverwork in historic styles. Rather than consistently employing conventional German hallmarks, many Hanau workshops used deliberately archaic pseudo-marks inspired by earlier European silver. Because these marks were not officially registered and numerous variations were employed, many surviving examples—including the present piece—cannot be securely attributed to a particular workshop. Animal and bird-form silver objects were among the most engaging products of the Hanau workshops, combining virtuoso metalworking with the playful tradition of European silver drinking vessels and table ornaments. Comparable Hanau pheasants are documented with the same characteristic combination of chased plumage, hinged wings and removable heads. A handsome and highly sculptural example, particularly notable for the quality and density of its feather chasing, elegant proportions and beautifully articulated construction.
