About the Item

A fine set of 12 American silver knives. Designed by John Polhamus. Likely made by George Shiebler. (These were purchased with a set of forks with the same monogram and marked with the 1870s mark for George Sheibler.) In solid silver (likely sterling). In the 'Diamond' pattern. Polhamus was an important American silversmith active from ca. 1833 - 1874, who produced multiple patterns and also did a stint working for Tiffany & Co. The dies for his patterns would later fall into the hands of George Shiebler, who continued to produce them. Monogrammed to each handle. Marked to the blade of each knife. Simply a wonderful set of American silverware! Date: 19th Century Overall Condition: They are in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: One of the knives with a slight bend at the tip. Several have some spotting and fire scale throughout. Otherwise, there is some light edge wear, some light dings and indentations here and there, some fine and light surface scratches, and other signs of light wear consistent with age. Maker: Likely George Shiebler with John Polhamus' dies Marks: All of the knives marked to one side of the blade for J.P. / Patent / 1857, and to the other side of the blade for JAS MIX JR Fineness: Unmarked for silver fineness. Presumably sterling. Professionally tests as: Silver Measurements: Length: ca. 7 1/2 in. Width: ca. 3/4 in. Depth: ca. 1/8 in.
