About the Item

Circa 1960. We offer this extraordinary large-scale Mexican ceremonial mask, hand-carved in wood, depicting the powerful figure of the jaguar—one of the most ancient and sacred symbols of Mesoamerica. Associated with strength, the night, protection, and the spiritual world, the jaguar has held a central place in Indigenous ritual traditions for centuries. The piece stands out for its vivid original polychrome in yellow, black, red, and white, carefully applied to recreate the spotted coat and fierce expression of the feline. Its large circular eyes, prominent snout, and open mouth with carved fangs convey energy, character, and dramatic presence. It also retains natural fiber or hair applications used as whiskers and decorative accents, adding movement, texture, and ritual authenticity. The carving displays remarkable craftsmanship, with strong proportions and an execution full of personality. The surface shows a beautiful aged patina and natural wear consistent with time and ceremonial use, elements that enhance its historical character. Beyond its original function, this mask endures today as a striking work of Mexican folk art and an exceptional collector’s piece.
