About the Item

A striking carved and gilded wall sconce in the shape of a classical torch, made around 1900 in the French Empire style. The long tapering body ends at the top in a flaming torch of carved leaves, with a small eagle with spread wings just below it, and three lights branch out from the middle: two arms carved as swans with curved necks and spread wings, and a central candle arm. At the bottom the torch finishes in a carved pine-cone finial. The torch, the eagle and the swan are the classic symbols of the Empire style created for Napoleon by the architects Percier and Fontaine, and the swan was the personal emblem of Empress Joséphine at Malmaison. Around 1900 these motifs were revived for grand interiors all over Europe, and carvers produced lighting like this for hotels, theatres and villas. The carving is lively and full of detail, especially in the feathers of the swans and the leaves of the flame, and the gilding gives a warm golden glow when the lamp is on. A sconce like this brings instant grandeur to a hallway, a staircase, a dining room or next to a mirror or a fireplace. It fits beautifully in a neoclassical, Empire, Regency or Hollywood Regency interior, and makes a bold, decorative statement on a plain, painted wall in a contemporary home. It is fitted for electricity with three light points. Measurements: height 85 cm (33.5 in), width 46 cm (18.1 in), depth 26 cm (10.2 in). Condition: good antique condition. The wood shows some age cracks and probably some old repairs in the swans; the gilding may have been renewed at a later date. Wear consistent with age and use. We advise having the wiring checked by a local electrician according to the standards of your country. Shipping: we pack the sconce ourselves in a custom wooden crate with plenty of padding, so it travels safely worldwide. French Neoclassical Style Five-Light Carved Wood Chandelier, Gilt Finish, 1950s

French Neoclassical Style Five-Light Carved Wood Chandelier, Gilt Finish, 1950s

Located in Boven Leeuwen, NL

An elegant French five-light chandelier from circa 1950, carved from wood and finished in a warm, softly aged gold paint. It takes its cue from French Neoclassical and Directoire design, but its lighter proportions give it a relaxed, mid-century feel: refined without being formal. Design The chandelier is built around a tall, tapered central stem with long recessed grooves and carved leaf and lotus-inspired ornament. Five gracefully curved wooden arms extend from the circular body, each ending in a carved candle cup with a decorative beaded rim. A carved pendant ornament and a drop-shaped finial complete the balanced, symmetrical composition. The architectural stem and the rhythm of the five arms give the fixture a strong presence while keeping a sense of airiness. The gold-painted finish has developed an attractive aged surface, with rubbing, subtle discoloration and darker accents in the carved recesses. These tonal variations bring out the carving and give the chandelier depth and warmth. Condition Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age. The gold-painted finish shows rubbing, discoloration and small paint losses, with a darker patina in the recesses, and there are minor old holes and imperfections, as shown in the photos. Structurally intact. The chandelier is sold without shades; we recommend having the wiring checked and the fixture installed by a qualified electrician. Dimensions: height 55 cm, diameter 41 cm. Where it works With its compact diameter, the chandelier suits an entrance hall, bedroom, dressing room, intimate dining area, library, powder room or smaller sitting room, and a pair would look lovely in a long corridor. It combines well with French antiques, Gustavian furniture, Belgian minimalism, Italian mid-century pieces and restrained contemporary interiors, in the spirit of designers such as Jacques Adnet, Maison Jansen, Jean-Charles Moreux, Paolo Buffa or Axel Vervoordt, without needing a strict period setting. Its warm surface contrasts beautifully with limewashed walls, pale plaster, natural stone and linen.
