About the Item

A set of two beautiful pine wood wall sconces / lights / lamps, with off-white fabric shades with lace trims. Made by Markslöjd AB, in Sweden, c. 1960s. Great original condition. The occasional faint stain on the lampshades. Light source: E26/E27 standard screw bulb. Switch on the white cord. European electrical plug (but we can change it for an American if you'd like). Markslöjd AB is a Swedish lighting company founded in 1963 in the municipality of Mark, in Västergötland. Its origins lie in the region's long tradition of handicraft and small-scale manufacturing, particularly woodworking and textile production. The name Markslöjd combines the name of the municipality with slöjd, the Swedish word for handicraft. The company initially operated as a handicraft business, producing a variety of wooden household objects, including candlesticks and turned wooden lamp bases. The wooden components were manufactured in a workshop in Kinna, while textile lampshades were also produced locally. The business relied on a network of local craftspeople, and virtually all production took place within the municipality of Mark. In its early years, the company's products were sold throughout Sweden by travelling salesmen, who transported their goods in a specially equipped caravan. During the 1960s and 1970s, lighting gradually became the company's principal activity. The combination of turned wooden bases and textile shades formed the foundation of its early collections, reflecting both the traditional craftsmanship of the region and the growing demand for decorative domestic lighting in post-war Sweden. As the business expanded, Markslöjd developed a broader assortment of table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling fixtures, moving from a small local handicraft operation towards a more substantial lighting manufacturer. The company continued to grow during the 1980s, establishing itself as a significant supplier of decorative lighting in the Swedish market. Its development was closely connected to the manufacturing traditions of the so-called Textile Kingdom (Textilriket), the industrial region of western Sweden where textile production, furniture manufacturing and related crafts had long played an important economic role. A major change came in 1994, when Markslöjd was sold to a Gothenburg-based investment company. This marked the beginning of a new phase of commercial expansion and internationalisation. Swedish manufacturing was gradually discontinued, and production increasingly shifted to external suppliers, initially in countries such as Poland and later China. The company subsequently developed into one of Northern Europe's larger lighting brands, with an extensive range covering both decorative and functional lighting. Despite this transformation, Markslöjd has retained its headquarters and central warehouse in Skene, close to its original home in Mark. Its early history of local craftsmanship was also revisited in 2022 through the limited-edition Made in Sweden collection, developed in collaboration with designer Joakim Thedin. The table lamps Pater and Amfi were conceived as a tribute to the company's origins and its original tradition of handcrafted wooden lamp bases.
