About the Item

Handcrafted using the traditional Japanese Yakisugi scorching technique, this large sculptural timber lamp combines ancient surface treatment methods with refined contemporary form. Each piece is individually turned by hand from solid English ash, sequoia, or cypress wood, creating a striking lighting object rich in texture, depth, and character. Yakisugi - also known as Shou Sugi Ban - process originated in Japan and was traditionally developed as a durable protective and aesthetic finish for cypress timber. The technique involves many sequences of carefully charring the wood surface and brushing to produce a beautifully deep black finish while also significantly enhancing the timber’s durability and resistance. The resulting surface reveals subtle variations in texture, grain, and tone, ensuring every lamp possesses its own unique visual identity. The bold turned form allows the dramatic charred finish to take centre stage, balancing sculptural simplicity with rich organic detail. Chrome electrical fittings provide a subtle contemporary contrast to the blackened timber, while discreet non-slip feet offer practicality and stability. Because each lamp is individually handcrafted and finished using this traditional process, slight variations in dimensions, texture, and surface appearance are to be expected and celebrated as part of the authenticity of the craft. Designed to complement both minimalist contemporary interiors and more atmospheric traditional spaces, the lamp creates a warm and distinctive presence whether used as ambient lighting, a bedside piece, or a sculptural accent within a living space.
