About the Item

This sculptural lamp is attributed to Paul Mayén and based on his celebrated 1965 “Beehive” design. A tall, egg-shaped shade of woven rattan floats on three slender hairpin legs in black enameled iron. The bulb sits within the hive, so light filters softly through the open weave for a warm, ambient glow. At 27 inches tall, the lamp works as a low floor lamp beside a sofa or lounge chair, or as a statement piece on a console. The rattan has been finished in black at a later date, which gives the design a graphic, unified silhouette with its black base. Mayén was a Spanish-born architect and industrial designer trained in New York. He founded Habitat, Intrex, and Architectural Supplements, and two of his designs are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. The lamp has been rewired with a new cord and an inline on/off switch.
