About the Item

Antique Victorian Windsor Armchair, William Birch-1860-1890 A 19th-century Victorian English Windsor armchair. Often attributed to William Birch of High Wycombe, it features typical turned spindles and a carved back. Each chair has a two-part, vase-shaped and disc-shaped back, flanked by pairs of ring-turned spindles and spirally turned, rectangular, fluted, and carved supports, all beneath a fluted and disc-shaped, spirally crowned ornament. The armrests are spread out, resting on spirally turned and hooked front supports. The saddle seat features baluster-shaped and spirally carved legs connected by a crinoline brace. Solid elm for the seat and ash/beech for the rest of the frame.
