About the Item

A highly sculptural pair of 20th-century carved side chairs executed in the Continental Neoclassical taste. The frames feature dramatic openwork backs masterfully carved as intertwined, dual-scaled serpents. This distinctive motif flows continuously down through the rails to form the legs, subtly mimicking the natural form of a snake. The chairs have a light patinated guilt finish, warm patina and are upholstered in a soft cream woven fabric. This exquisite 20th-century pair beautifully emulates rare 19th-century European Italliante models, such as the famous continental examples documented in prominent historical collections. With their fluid lines, rich material contrast, and avant-garde silhouette, these striking conversation pieces are absolutely perfect for today's curated eclectic maximalist interiors. While beautifully capturing the eclectic spirit of 20th-century design, this striking pair of armchairs is sculpted directly after the rare 19th-century Continental originals. This specific serpent-back form echoes the chairs featured in The Ian & Carolina Irving Collection, which were recently auctioned at Sotheby's.
